Frequently Asked Questions

About Infrared

What is Infrared Heating?

Infrared heating works using infrared radiation by emitting radiant heat that warms people, surfaces, and objects directly, rather than heating the surrounding air. This is similar to how the sun provides warmth, but without ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Because infrared heat is absorbed directly by solid objects, it can provide comfortable warmth in both small and large spaces, indoors and outdoors, without relying on air circulation.

How does Infrared Heating work?

Traditional heating systems rely on convection, warming the air and circulating it around a room. Infrared heaters work differently by emitting radiant heat that is absorbed directly by people and surrounding surfaces.

This means warmth can be felt quickly, without waiting for the air temperature to rise. For a more detailed explanation, see our Infrared Heating Guide or The Science of Infrared Heat.

What are the key Features of Infrared Heating?

Infrared heating panels provide radiant warmth by heating people and surfaces directly, creating a stable and comfortable indoor environment. Depending on the system design, heating can be controlled using standard thermostats or smart controls.

Many infrared systems also support zoned heating, allowing individual rooms or areas to be heated independently for greater control and efficiency.

What are the benefits of Infrared Heating?

There are many benefits to using infrared heating over traditional heating methods. Because it heats objects and people directly, rooms can feel comfortable more quickly and with less reliance on circulating warm air.

Infrared heaters require minimal maintenance, operate silently, and can be installed without pipework or wet systems. They are often used in spaces where consistent comfort, low maintenance, and flexible control are important.

Infrared heating can also reduce the risk of mould, as it warms up objects and the air , preventing condensation from forming.

Are Infrared heaters environmentally friendly?

Infrared heaters produce no emissions at the point of use and do not rely on combustion, open flames, or fuel storage. When powered by renewable electricity, they can form part of a low-carbon heating approach.

Because infrared heating can be zoned and targeted, it can also help reduce unnecessary energy use in unused rooms. Learn more on our Environmental Benefits of Infrared Heating page.

Can Infrared heaters help me save money on my bills?

Infrared heating can help manage energy use by heating only the rooms that are in use and delivering warmth directly to occupants and surfaces. This can reduce overall heating demand compared to systems that heat entire buildings continuously.

Actual savings depend on factors such as insulation, room size, ceiling height, and usage patterns. For a detailed explanation, see our guide on infrared heating running costs.

Can infrared heating replace a gas boiler?

frared heating can be used as a primary heating system when correctly designed and sized, or as a supplementary system alongside existing heating. Suitability depends on building layout, insulation, and how the space is used.

For a detailed comparison, see Infrared Heating vs Gas Central Heating.

How long does it take to warm up a room?

Infrared heaters begin emitting radiant heat almost immediately, so warmth can often be felt within minutes. However, the time it takes for a room to feel fully warm depends on room size, insulation, and the thermal mass of the building.

Larger or colder spaces may take longer as walls and surfaces gradually absorb and re-radiate heat.

What are the disadvantages of Infrared heating?

Infrared heating panels can have a higher upfront cost than some conventional heaters. They also work best when there is a clear line of sight to the heated area, meaning obstructions can reduce effectiveness.

As with any heating system, correct design and placement are essential. You can read more in our blog post where we debunk Infrared myths

Can I paint Infrared heater panels?

Painting infrared heater panels is generally not recommended. If painting is required, only heat-resistant, manufacturer-approved paints should be used, as standard paints may affect performance or durability.

Does Infrared Heating make noise when switched on?

Infrared heaters work without producing any noise as there’s no fan involved; they’re only radiating infrared rays. This makes Infrared heaters ideal for environments where peace and quiet are paramount, like in a bedroom or office.

Quality & Safety

Is Infrared Heating safe?

Yes, infrared heating is generally considered safe for both residential and commercial use. Far-infrared (FIR) heaters emit a gentle heat that does not cause burns or other health risks. However, it’s important to follow safety guidelines such as maintaining a safe distance from the heater and ensuring proper installation by qualified electricians.

Are Infrared heaters safe to use around children and pets?

Infrared heaters are just as safe, if not safer, than other types of heating. However, it’s important to take the usual safety precautions with infrared heaters as you would with any other type of heater.

Do Infrared heaters have any fire risks?

Our infrared heaters are designed with safety in mind and include features such as overheat protection. When connected to our Netmostat, they are switched off automatically for a few minutes every hour to prevent over heating. When installed correctly there are no fire hazards. As with all electrics they must be installed to full regulations by a qualified electrician with a fused spur

What makes your infrared heating systems high quality?

Our infrared heating systems are built with robust materials to ensure superior performance, efficiency, and durability. Each unit undergoes rigorous testing to meet our quality standards. See all our certifications

Do you have certifications?

Yes, all our infrared heaters are certified UKCA and CE. We also have certifications for ROHS(Restriction of Hazardous Substances compliance)

What materials are used in your infrared heaters?

Our heaters are made from robust and durable materials, including advanced carbon fiber heating elements and high-quality aluminium, designed to withstand high temperatures and provide long-lasting service. Our panels also have a FIR coating which protects the panel from warping

How long do Infrared heaters last?

Infrared panels have no moving parts, so they’re designed for a very long service life with minimal maintenance. With correct installation and thermostat control, they’ll provide reliable heat for many years. Every heater comes with a 5-year warranty as standard.

Installation & Maintenance

Is infrared heating easy to install?

Yes - we supply fitted brackets and a diagram showing where the holes need to be on the wall. The supplied screws can then be fitted, and the panel can be fitted on like a canvas

For the electrical side then please refer to our installation guide

Where is the best place to install an infrared heater?

The best place to install an infrared heater is higher up on a wall or ceiling where it can provide even heat distribution without obstructions. As with traditional radiators which can go low and behind furniture, the best way to get the most out of your infrared heater is by placing it higher up.

We also recommend not facing windows as the infrared rays will go through and out of the room

Ideally the infrared heater would be within 3 metres of where you sit to get the best comfort

Can Infrared heaters be used in bathrooms or other damp environments?

Infrared heaters are suitable for use in damp environments like bathrooms. They have high energy efficiency compared to other heating options and are durable and cost-effective in damp areas.

Can I heat my whole house with infrared heating?

Yes, you can heat your whole house with infrared heating. However, it’s important to choose the right size and number of infrared panels for each room to ensure adequate heating. For full house refurbs, new builds and extensions, Infrared can be built into the plans for the full home

Infrared Heating also has the added advantage of only being installed in certain rooms, or by adding heaters only to certain rooms budget permitting, and slowly changing over to full house Infrared

Can Infrared heating be used in larger spaces?

Yes, but you may need multiple heaters for large open spaces. Position the heaters strategically to cover the entire area evenly. Infrared heaters are effective in open spaces as they heat objects directly rather than the air. Use our wattage calculator to see what wattage would be required for your space

Do I need a thermostat per panel?

Not necessarily. While each infrared heating panel can be controlled with its own thermostat, it is also possible to use a single thermostat to control multiple panels in the same room or zone. This can simplify operation and potentially reduce costs. Speak to a electrician to ensure electrical safety and standards are met when adding multiple units to one thermostat

What does Lot 20 mean?

Lot 20 is a regulation from the European Ecodesign Directive aimed at improving the energy efficiency of local space heaters. To comply with Lot 20, heaters must meet specific efficiency standards and include features such as electronic thermostatic control, open window detection, and adaptive start control. All our infrared products are Lot 20 compliant when installed with our Smart thermostat

What splash protection do I need in a bathroom?

Bathrooms require a IP rating of a minimum IP44 - this protects against splashes of water. All our panels are a minimum IP44 which means they can be installed in bathrooms

Will the wiring make my house look messy?

When properly installed, the wiring for infrared heaters should not make your house look messy. For new build homes or refurbs than the wiring can be done at Phase 1 where the wires can be hidden behind walls.

If surface wiring is necessary, it can be neatly arranged using cable covers or conduits. A professional electrician can help ensure that the wiring is discreet and aesthetically pleasing by chasing wiring into the walls, or feeding them through or behind walls and ceilings
