Frequently Asked Questions

About Infrared

What is Infrared Heating?

Infrared heating works using infrared radiation (the same as the sun) to warm up objects and people instead of warming the air. Infrared heating isn’t harmful like ultraviolet rays and works incredibly efficiently to heat large and small spaces both indoors and out.

How does Infrared Heating work?

Most traditional heating methods use convection. Convection is the process of heating the surrounding air and circulating it around the space until it has adequately warmed up. Infrared heaters work differently. They emit heat that instantly warms you and surrounding objects up in a concentrated beam of warming light. Unlike electric radiators, you won’t be waiting for the room to warm up. Infrared heating offers immediate, convenient warmth and a host of other benefits too.

What are the key Features of Infrared Heating?

Infrared heating panels emit waves of radiant heat which creates a long-lasting effect by warming up objects and people. Depending on your choice of IR heating panel, you can control your heating preferences with a thermostat or even via WiFi control on your smartphone. Our smart thermostat is reliable, fast and incredibly easy to use. It even has energy saving features included to help you reduce your energy consumption — and your carbon footprint.

What are the benefits of Infrared Heating?

There are many benefits to using infrared heating over traditional heating methods. Because infrared radiation warms up objects and people directly, it’s quicker to take effect and can also help dry out dampness, preventing mould from building up over time.

More efficiency, less energy. Infrared heaters warm rooms quickly and are much more cost-effective than conventional heating equipment. Infrared heating can reduce the risk of mould, as it warms up objects and the air — preventing condensation from forming.

Infrared heating panels also require less energy than electric heaters and require little-to-no maintenance. They’re a great choice for allergy/asthma sufferers as IR heating panels don’t circulate dusty or dirty air around the room like electric heaters making it a healthier heating choice.

Because they run off electricity, infrared heaters are easy to install (no pipeline needed!) and don’t get in the way of your interior design.

Infrared heating solutions are certainly more cost-effective than traditional heaters and low-maintenance compared to propane heating.

Are Infrared heaters environmentally friendly?

Yes, IR heaters are environmentally friendly. Infrared heaters don’t add pollutants to the room you use them in. They work without fuel lines, open flames, toxic by-products, or carbon combustion. In essence, IR heaters add nothing to the environment and don’t take anything from it, either. Since these heaters only warm up specific objects and areas, they don’t waste power warming the whole room.

Can Infrared heaters help me save money on my bills?

Yes. Compared to electric heaters, infrared heating panels are more cost-effective. They require less power to produce the same amount of heat an electric heater does. An infrared panel requires a third of the wattage input of an electric heater, meaning your energy consumption goes down, as well as your electricity bill.

This means that if you choose an infrared heater, only the areas in your home you need heated will be heated up. When you don’t heat up your whole house, your heating bill will become considerably lower. You also won’t have to preheat the room since infrared heat works right away. Some of these heaters only use 350 watts of power and almost all of the warmth created is sent out, leading to heating efficiency at an economical price.

Infrared heating can reduce your heating costs by 30-50%. Of course, how much you will save does depend on the construction of your home, ceiling height, insulation, and more.

Can infrared heating replace a gas boiler?

Yes, infrared heating can replace a gas boiler. Infrared heaters offer a modern alternative to traditional heating systems by providing direct warmth to objects and people in the room. This can result in more efficient energy use and lower heating costs. However, you would have to ensure you calculate the requirements per room accurately using our wattage calculator to ensure optimal warmth

How long does it take to warm up a room?

Infrared heaters can start providing warmth almost immediately, typically, you can feel the warmth within a few minutes. However, the time it takes to feel a noticeable increase in room temperature can vary based on the room size, insulation, and the specific heater size. Larger rooms will take longer for the objects and walls to warm up to then emit radiant heat to increase the room temperature

What are the disadvantages of Infrared heating?

There may be some disadvantages of Infrared heating such as the initial cost of infrared panels can be higher than some conventional heating systems. However the longer terms costs are lower than traditional heating. Other disadvantages can be that Infrared heaters need a clear line of sight to be most effective, so obstructions can reduce their efficiency.

Can I paint Infrared heater panels?

Generally we do not recommend this, however it is possible. You must use UV resistant paint which is able to withstand higher temperatures

Does Infrared Heating make noise when switched on?

Infrared heaters work without producing any noise as there’s no fan involved; they’re only radiating infrared rays. This makes Infrared heaters ideal for environments where peace and quiet are paramount, like in a bedroom or office.

Quality & Safety

Is Infrared Heating safe?

Yes, infrared heating is generally considered safe for both residential and commercial use. Far-infrared (FIR) heaters emit a gentle heat that does not cause burns or other health risks. However, it’s important to follow safety guidelines such as maintaining a safe distance from the heater and ensuring proper installation by qualified electricians.

Are Infrared heaters safe to use around children and pets?

Infrared heaters are just as safe, if not safer, than other types of heating. However, it’s important to take the usual safety precautions with infrared heaters as you would with any other type of heater.

Do Infrared heaters have any fire risks?

Our infrared heaters are designed with safety in mind and include features such as overheat protection. When connected to our Netmostat, they are switched off automatically for a few minutes every hour to prevent over heating. When installed correctly there are no fire hazards. As with all electrics they must be installed to full regulations by a qualified electrician with a fused spur

What makes your infrared heating systems high quality?

Our infrared heating systems are built with cutting edge technology and high grade materials to ensure superior performance, efficiency, and durability. Each unit undergoes rigorous testing to meet our quality standards. See all our certifications

Do you have certifications?

Yes, all our infrared heaters are certified UKCA and CE. We also have certifications for ROHS(Restriction of Hazardous Substances compliance)

What materials are used in your infrared heaters?

Our heaters are made from robust and durable materials, including advanced carbon fiber heating elements and high-quality aluminium, designed to withstand high temperatures and provide long-lasting service. Our panels also have a FIR coating which protects the panel from warping

How long do Infrared heaters last?

Our infrared heating panels are designed to last for many years, with an average lifespan of 20,000 to 30,000 hours of continuous use, depending on the model and usage conditions. All our products also come with excellent warranties.

Installation & Maintenance

Is infrared heating easy to install?

Yes - we supply fitted brackets and a diagram showing where the holes need to be on the wall. The supplied screws can then be fitted, and the panel can be fitted on like a canvas

For the electrical side then please refer to our installation guide

Where is the best place to install an infrared heater?

The best place to install an infrared heater is higher up on a wall or ceiling where it can provide even heat distribution without obstructions. As with traditional radiators which can go low and behind furniture, the best way to get the most out of your infrared heater is by placing it higher up.

We also recommend not facing windows as the infrared rays will go through and out of the room

Ideally the infrared heater would be within 3 metres of where you sit to get the best comfort

Can Infrared heaters be used in bathrooms or other damp environments?

Infrared heaters are suitable for use in damp environments like bathrooms. They have high energy efficiency compared to other heating options and are durable and cost-effective in damp areas.

Can I heat my whole house with infrared heating?

Yes, you can heat your whole house with infrared heating. However, it’s important to choose the right size and number of infrared panels for each room to ensure adequate heating. For full house refurbs, new builds and extensions, Infrared can be built into the plans for the full home

Infrared Heating also has the added advantage of only being installed in certain rooms, or by adding heaters only to certain rooms budget permitting, and slowly changing over to full house Infrared

Can Infrared heating be used in larger spaces?

Yes, but you may need multiple heaters for large open spaces. Position the heaters strategically to cover the entire area evenly. Infrared heaters are effective in open spaces as they heat objects directly rather than the air. Use our wattage calculator to see what wattage would be required for your space

Do I need a thermostat per panel?

Not necessarily. While each infrared heating panel can be controlled with its own thermostat, it is also possible to use a single thermostat to control multiple panels in the same room or zone. This can simplify operation and potentially reduce costs. Speak to a electrician to ensure electrical safety and standards are met when adding multiple units to one thermostat

What does Lot 20 mean?

Lot 20 is a regulation from the European Ecodesign Directive aimed at improving the energy efficiency of local space heaters. To comply with Lot 20, heaters must meet specific efficiency standards and include features such as electronic thermostatic control, open window detection, and adaptive start control. All our infrared products are Lot 20 compliant when installed with our Smart thermostat

What splash protection do I need in a bathroom?

Bathrooms require a IP rating of a minimum IP44 - this protects against splashes of water. All our panels are a minimum IP44 which means they can be installed in bathrooms

Will the wiring make my house look messy?

When properly installed, the wiring for infrared heaters should not make your house look messy. For new build homes or refurbs than the wiring can be done at Phase 1 where the wires can be hidden behind walls.

If surface wiring is necessary, it can be neatly arranged using cable covers or conduits. A professional electrician can help ensure that the wiring is discreet and aesthetically pleasing by chasing wiring into the walls, or feeding them through or behind walls and ceilings
