Testimonial - Residential Home

Phillip Johnson undertook a full renovation of an older bungalow with the aim of creating a modern, energy-efficient home that could operate without a gas supply. Comfort, controllability, and long-term running costs were key considerations, alongside a desire to reduce environmental impact and future-proof the property against rising energy prices.

Like many older homes, the property previously relied on conventional heating methods that struggled to provide consistent warmth across different rooms. Uneven temperatures, high energy use, and limited flexibility made it clear that a different approach was needed as part of the wider refurbishment.

After researching alternative electric heating options, Phillip identified infrared heating as a system capable of delivering targeted, efficient warmth while integrating effectively with renewable energy technologies already planned for the home.

“We started a project to make an eco house from an old run-down bungalow. We began with solar power, insulated the loft, walls, and floors, and removed the gas supply. We researched the best electric heating and discovered infrared panels, which could be installed as a full system with thermostats. We were sceptical at first, but we are very pleased — it works well and is very efficient. The comfort, ease of use, and energy savings have been outstanding.”

The Heating Challenge

The original heating system was inefficient and poorly suited to the upgraded insulation and layout changes planned for the property. Traditional convection-based systems would have required extensive pipework, ongoing maintenance, and continued reliance on fossil fuels.

Phillip wanted a solution that allowed room-by-room temperature control, reduced wasted energy, and could operate efficiently alongside solar PV. The goal was not simply to replace the existing heating, but to redesign how heat was delivered throughout the home.

The Infrared Heating Solution

Working with the technical team at Infrared Heating Supplies, a bespoke infrared heating plan was developed for the property. Eight infrared panels were installed across the main living areas, bedrooms, kitchen, and hallway, with each zone independently controlled using smart thermostats.

Infrared heating works by emitting radiant heat that warms people and surfaces directly, rather than relying on circulating warm air. This approach reduces heat loss through drafts and delivers a more even, comfortable temperature throughout the space.

The panels’ slim, minimalist design also suited the refurbished interior, blending seamlessly into both contemporary and traditional areas of the home without dominating wall space or disrupting the overall aesthetic.

Performance and Living Experience

Since installation, the infrared heating system has provided fast, responsive warmth with consistent temperatures across all rooms. The ability to control each area independently has allowed energy use to be closely matched to daily routines, improving efficiency without compromising comfort.

By removing the gas supply entirely and relying on electric infrared heating supported by solar PV, Phillip has significantly reduced ongoing energy costs while simplifying maintenance requirements. The system has proven easy to use, reliable, and well suited to modern low-energy living.
